Jim Shepherd started his 10 piece (Versatile Brass) ensemble in 1972. When Gordon Higgingbottom (the brilliant Horn player) joined, we had a phone call. The group had an important job coming up, and could we help? Gordon knew our new arrangement of ''IF'' (which featured Horn), and would the Brass Band parts be suitable for their new 10 piece group ? It would have worked to a degree, but bot good enough for a group of this calibre. So Derek Ashmore made a special 10 piece arrangement for JSVB. Soon afterwards, we had calls telling us that ''we have just heard JSVB, and are starting a 10 piece group, but we don't have suitable music''. That was the start, making Hallamshire the first publisher of 10 piece brass (using Brass Band instrumenation). We made it a rule to make the music ''comfortable''. i.e. No high notes, easy keys, and above all, to sound full. The music is suitable for schools, bands that are short of players, jobs that you can't take a full band to, and especially if you have some really keen players. We even have Wind ensembles using these arrangements. The music is compatible with our Brass and Wind music, and is very interesting to play, as you are not duplicating other parts.
